From: Rob Greaves Call: VK2GOM / G0MOH QTH: Sydney, Australia
Message: G'day all,
Just to let old friends in the UK know I now have my Australian callsign - VK2GOM. Have lived in Australia since Nov '07; very different from the UK (better climate for one!) but thoroughly enjoying it.
Currently trying to get my head around the Aussie band plans, and the new 'S20' being 146.500MHz 2m instead of 145.5, and the fact that the 70cm allocation here is a whopping 30MHz wide!
Hopefully catch you on the air one day when band condx step up a gear.
73's - Rob VK2GOM / G0MOH

Message: Dear Sir,
I hope you don't mind me contacting you this way but my Godfather in Llandudno has asked me to sort a radio reception problem. My Godfather is responsible for me getting involved in electronics from putting me on his knee at 4 and allowing me to tune in his R1155 and then giving me old copies of Practical Wireless as bed time reading - he has a lot to answer for as I have been in the electronics field for some 25 years, a SWL 45 years and hold a G8 for longer than I can remember.
As his hearing began to get worse - the tinnitus got more in the way - I introduced him to the joys of decoding RTTY, CW, Fax, and Navtex via a PC. He was 85 when I got him his first PC and he is now 93. When he lived in St Asaph on the Old Denbigh Road he was able to receive all the afore mentioned. Five years ago he lost his wife and a year later his lower leg and had to move into sheltered housing. He can receive everything as before but Navtex and it has become a challenge as to why.
He lives in Penrhyn Court, Maes-Y-Wylan, Penrhyn Bay, Llandudno on the ground floor and is using an R5000 which is fully up to spec - friend of mine is Castle Electronics of Bobbington Airport and Llanfair Caereinon - and an active HF loop from Martin Lynch.
As I say the challenge is to receive Navtex - nothing is heard on either 518kHz or 490kHz. I have searched the web (he doesn't have internet access) for transmit times etc and paid him a visit and sat with him but still haven't received anything. Stations around the same frequency's appeared at the right signal strength.
Basically we need to know if it is possible to receive Navtex at his present location. Any help would be gratefully received by both of us as his radio is something he has become to rely on as he gets older - I hope I have his mental facilities at his age.
Thanking you in anticipation,
Peter C Watts, G8VSK - 07973 122 601

Message: Hi all, Just looking in on the site and saw the news about Roy GW8XLL. As you said Alan, he was a driving force for the club in the area. With Ted GW0DSJ, Roy met me when I first came to the Rhyl Club. I had such a friendly greeting that I stayed for many years. Roy will be missed by a lot of people and I don't think anybody will ever beat him for his friendliness and enthusiasm for the hobby. 73 Mike

Message: I'm very sad to report that Roy Stubbs, GW8XLL, passed away at the beginning of the week, aged 83.
As you know Roy was a very keen member of the club, and was very heavily involved with the running of the club for many years. Roy served on the committe, mainly as Chairman or Secretary, for a long time, and without his hard work and dedication, the club would not have existed for anywhere near as long as it did. Roy was also responsible for organising many Radio Contests, 'Special Events', and other activities which made the Rhyl Club a club to be proud of. He will be greatly missed by us all.
The funeral will be on on Thursday 21st Feb, at 1.00pm, in St Thomas' Church, Rhyl.

Message: Remember me? GW6JJU? I joined you at the ambulance station and splash point just a couple of times. My dad was afraid of me drinking I think.
Looking back, he should have been more worried about me getting into amateur radio! I'm back to Denbigh most weekends, although currently working in Acton W3(what a dump). Been overseas for nine years, - mobile phone network design/optimisation. It's a shame that there aren't any such comms jobs in North Wales. If anyone has any ideas to get me back here permanently, please please let me know! This spring I've tried 4m. Hacked down the FTV-707 transverter, first from 2m to 6m, and now to 4m; driving a couple of 4CX250B. Not sure why I bothered, there's hardly any activity. Is anyone up for a VHF contest effort? I fancy a serious try from Cadair Berwyn, just a bit south of your Moel Ferna site. Regards to all of you. Rhys

Message: I've moved the club website back to a UK based server, as QSL.net in the USA was getting extremely slow during busy times. Hopefully things will be a bit faster now. I've had to write new scripts for the guestbook, forms, and hit counters etc., as I was using QSL.net's built-in scripts before. I've also taken this opportunity to re-design the site slightly. I hope things work OK. Any problems please contact me using the 'contact us' link shown at the bottom of the page.

Message: I've been studying some old club paperwork dating back to 1956. (thanks Roy GW8XLL). It appears the club was originally called the Prestatyn & District Amateur Radio Club for a few months, then the Flintshire Radio Society for about 10 years, before changing it's name to the Rhyl and District Amateur Radio Club in 1967.

Message: I've reduced the resolution of all the small 'thumbnail' pictures on the pictures pages, to try to speed up the loading time for people with slow dial-up connections. The fullsize pictures, available by clicking on the thumbnails, are still at the same fairly high resolution, so these will still take a while to load if you click on them.
